Serbian saying: “In war the politicians give ammunition, the rich give the food and the poor give their children
When the war is over the politicians get back the leftover ammunition, the rich grow more food and the poor search for the graves of their children.”

Floating of the birr is turned to a cruel joke: Two weeks ago, Abysinian offered birr 124/$ + 16% (144/$). BMR was around 120/$. Now moved up to about $134/$. Lately CBE is offering birr 112/$ + 8 (120/$) :) Meanwhile floating is eroding livelihoods of ordinary citizens.

Br11,000 ($90) per month falls in high bracket & taxed at 35%. Br1,000 ($8) is taxed at 10%. Yet, someone indulges in expressing concerns about possible income tax troubles in a sector yet to be born, capital market! Obsessing with problems of the rich! addisfortune.news/capital-market

Within a few days of br floating, I started calling narrowing tye spread! Still a rather loose statement though! Seems total misreading of what mkt led FX means. It does not mean #NBE cannot regulate commercial banks. This regulation should say the spread SHOULD not exceed 3%!

#CBE reduced selling rate closer to the buying rare, reacting to #NBE's guideline of reducing spread to 2% abadoning catching up with the BM. ThIs has made me doubt authenticity of CBE's earlier announcement that only 28% of its approved LCs being utilized. Floating for nothing!?

Alarming posts are circulating regarding #Ethiopia in the latest #UNDP poverty report. So I created this table. Am I missing something? Ethiopia does NOT on top of the ranking! We need fact based stories about the status of poverty in our country. No need to twist plain data.

I do not see those numbers in the UNDP report! Whoever created this table has very serious trouble with numbers. In such small table two fundamental transposition errors. 68% is reported as 86. 27% is reported as 72%. What is going on?

There is a problem with targeting IR to fight inflation in #Ethiopia. Here inflation is caused by supply side constraint, i.e., shortage of goods in mkts. Solution: a) cut down loans to unproductive mega projects; b) incentivize productive projects by reducing interest rates.

AyeleGelan (@ayelegelan) 's Twitter Profile Photo

a) Cutting loans to large unproductive mega projects is paramount on two grounds: i) They have fueled inflation, pumping large sums of money into the economy but they do not generate goods that apear on supermarket shelves. ii) High interest has never deterred their decision.

AyeleGelan (@ayelegelan) 's Twitter Profile Photo

b) Sectors that produce goods, supply to the markets & hence contribute to reduction in inflation have been starved of loans! A classic crowding out has been happening, lending primarily to less productive sectors, e.g. public projects, IM & EX etc. REVERSE these priorities!

Can #AddisAbaba city be entitled to self-identification & self-determination? It seems an easy question until you examine the political discourse surrounding the city, i.e., the promotion of ethnic identity at the expense of civic virtues: befeqe.blogspot.com/2025/06/Addis-

This is "only in Ethiopia" type question. Addis is not the only capital city in the world. Capital cities normally come under the larger regional gov't in which they are located (e.g. London under England). Then mega cities would have layers of devolved local self-governmence.

#Ethiopia was excluded from AGOA. Then the foreign firms left in droves. Why? This raises a fundamental issue. They were in Ethiopia to use it as an export platform, paying peanuts to workers. I put together this chart several years ago to convey that same message. 1/2

The red bar indicates #Ethiopia's export of shoes soared soon after the Chinese foot were giant arrived in 2011. Apart from that Ethiopia was not making any substantive benefits from #AGOA. The blue bars are dwarfed by the red ones. AGOA was meant to benefit the poor. 2/2
