As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, our Director-General Pierre Krähenbühl, reflects on the immense toll on civilians, the erosion of fundamental norms in armed conflict, and the urgent need to uphold IHL.

More than 120 armed conflicts rage across the world today. The rules of war exist to reduce the suffering in conflicts. Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, asks parties to conflicts to respect and ensure respect for international law.

The ICRC is outraged that on 16 April an ICRC premises in Gaza was struck and damaged by an explosive. This is the second such incident in three weeks; another premises in the area was struck by a tank shell on 24 March.

We’re pleased to share that we ICRC, together with Jordan Red Crescent and @IFRC in Jordan, have signed a Movement Coordination Agreement to strengthen our joint emergency response in #Jordan and enhance community resilience.

The deaths of our colleagues demand more than empty words of outrage: they demand action. The international community cannot keep looking away as the rules of war are ignored, and humanitarian workers deliberately targeted while trying to save lives. 📃 Full statement by ICRC

We’re devastated by the killing of our colleague Mahmoud Barakeh, who worked at the Red Cross Field Hospital. He was killed on his way home on Sunday 22 June. Our hearts are with his family and loved ones. Five colleagues have been killed in Gaza since October of 2023.
