Here is the link to the Shepherd/Durham grant application that John Whitmire supported and endorsed in 2019. It included the 4 to 3 lane reduction as well as the construction budget of 100 Mil USD (not including design) for both phases. memorialheightstirz5.com/wp-content/upl…

If you're not retired, you can't really show up at public session. This really is the NIMBY dynamic at play in Houston. You don't usually see it here. Like a kangaroo bouncing around in Texas, totally out of its element. Yet here it is!

🌈Prioritize people over cars Radom Capital Emmanuel Núñez Kinder Institute for Urban Research annual survey tells us year after year that Houston wants more walkable places. Shepherd Durham has the potential to be one. Memorial Heights Redevelopment Authority progress looks great. I strongly hope the project is permitted to continue. It will improve quality of life and economics. And

What is the walkability* of your neighborhood for the destinations that matter most to you? close.city

This tool is so helpful for folks looking to move or to evaluate the accessibility of their existing neighborhood to advocate for improvements!

If you are familiar with Radom Capital, and you've probably been to one of their projects, they specifically design and build to be people-friendly. It's very important that he's weighing in.

Clearly, I'm not the only one that got fooled.

“To provide context,” Radom added, “I’m not an activist, just a small business owner who personally voted for John Whitmire and understood him to be a pragmatic and effective leader”

I already pitched this FREE tool once before, it is really great if you want to find a place with walkable distance to things you care about (you can pick e.g. parks, restaurants, grocery stores, libraries etc.) It only uses distance, not safe infrastructure, but still amazing.

I went by Shepherd/Durham by today and the difference between what the project is (first par of video) and what the current status (second part) is so obvious that I don’t understand why Houston Mayor's Office prefers the current arrangement over what the project is.

Houston Chronicle These redesigns are street safety projects. Designs that reduce speeding, make traffic go the 30 or 35mph speed limit instead of 45mph that is currently driven, and improve pedestrian safety. The bike lanes are just a side product, NOT the main motivation!!!

Houston Chronicle The lane reduction is happening because there was unused capacity, as a result crazy speeding on a 4 way one way street, making it unsafe for drivers and pedestrians. The redesign, right sized the street for traffic, and excess space went to sidewalks. twitter.com/AustrianInHOU/…

Rumored for weeks, and predicted by critics of Mayor John Whitmire’s transportation policies, the city's decision to not support any plan that removes lanes is likely to leave a gap in bicycle lanes along the streets between Interstate 10 and 15th Street. trib.al/uUzshq7

EXACTLY same for me! He did not even voice doubt about an of these street safety improvement in the various
interviews/panel discussions. And he was asked about these topics. Almost feels like he purposefully hid his true views on the topic until after election.

Once the northern phase is complete, Houston will have the mother of A-B tests of road safety on its major streets. 15th Street is going to be a divider.

.Houston Chronicle Exhibit A: 11th St is 1M times safer today. Now the mayor is blocking the Shepherd upgrade that every study showed increases car AND pedestrian safety AND is a boon for business/real estate investment. Who at the city is bad at math? THAT is an INCREASE in tax base

Dug Begley What community input led to this halt? (no residents at city council meetings asked or this to be stopped) When were the community meetings? (@houmayor always talks about engaging residents)? Plus the traffic data shows the 4 lanes are oversized. twitter.com/AustrianInHOU/…

A one-family data point: since the north-of-15th Shepherd improvements have gone in, we have:
-walked south on Shepherd to restaurants & retail we didn’t previously frequent
-walked west across Shepherd to establishments we previously drove to
-not been bothered by fewer lanes
