My mum called to shout at me for about 40 mins today. At the end she said my aunt was likely to do the same. Apparently both needed to vent at a politician on how woeful the current lockdown was but couldn't find a politician that spoke Cantonese to vent at so I was it. Fair.

Update. Word seems to have spread since call from my mam. There's been a call from the uncle, the aunt, even one of mam's friends. All had plenty of expletives & views on how lockdown sucks & the gov can communicate better. It's like Liveline but in Cantonese & with cursing.

Folks this is exactly the type of racist BS that the likes of Trump & others have caused. Blaming Chinese people because of the virus's origins is exactly what leads to increase of racial abuse & racial assaults on Asians. It's a sad fact with stats to back up. Don't buy into it.

An interesting point made by many with this tweet is the naming of variants. Perhaps we need to stop calling them X country variants and call them by their actual names cause trust the data, when you name it after a certain country, immigrants from that country receives abuse.

We can understand race better if we think through Orientalism and antiblackness not as contradictory frameworks, but complementary tactics which wields "coolies" to discipline free Black labor, Black soldiers to fight Pacific wars, and "model minorities" to spurn "welfare queens"
