Dungeons & Dragons was a different creature when it was first published in 1974. Character attributes didn't result in huge die roll bonuses. Most improvements for your character came through Experience Points. It made the game fast playing and very much focused on the role

I had an absolute blast playing Barrows and Borderlands at ArneCon . Would recommend.
