Writing Proposal for the National Quantum Mission was an amazing experience. Networking across the nation, exchanging ideas and learning what others do. Culturally, would this be a watershed moment for Indian science?

Self-plagiarism needs a standardization. Just changing the name of the compound or material leaving the text largely untouched, and writing a new paper is another grey area. Probably unavoidable if someone is writing 30 papers in a year.

How thick is a single layer of MoS2?

Many seem to get this wrong, listing 6.5-7 A from AFM (where the tip picks up water & other surface things).

The answer is 6.15 A, from XRD carried out by Linus Pauling as a PhD student 101 yrs ago. His lab notebook: paulingblog.wordpress.com/2010/01/05/the…

This is Sri Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata (3 Mar 1839 - 19 May 1904). This photo was taken during his business trip to Vancouver, Canada, in 1893. His co-passenger was Swami Vivekananda. Possibly, that's when IISc Bangalore was conceptualized - a vision that stood the test of time.

The open day Physics, IISc is about triggering curiosity in young minds, & this is one of our most important contributions of IISC to society. The interest among the close to 10 thousand visitors to the Physics Department shows the enthusiasm in both children and their parents

Global avg of S&T workforce is ~1500/million. So 0.15% of world's population is working to improve the quality of life of the rest 99.85%. Surely, a better public awareness is needed on what exactly we do. Not just the success stories, but what it takes to reach those successes.

Those who worked abroad for any length of time understand how diversity helps good science. If we aspire to develop a serious scientific ecosystem we need to build diversity in the workforce - ethnic, gender, nationality, religious... - by providing equal opportunity to all.
