I've been obsessed lately by the question of Jewish institutions—how the left is going to sustain Jewish life when it seems clear we can't participate in institutional life. This pod begins to open up some of these questions through the The CJM's recent controversy. 👂👂👂

My husband, Prof. Steve Tamari, is out of the hospital. He will need surgery on his hand, and he is in pain from nine broken ribs. We are asking for time to rest and heal. We will not be taking media interviews at this time. Here is Steve's statement and ways you can support.

I found this piece incredibly helpful in explaining the thought pattern that appears operative in the response to student protest. Well worth your time.

Columbia faculty: We “have spent the day offering our help to defuse the situation on Columbia’s campus and have been rebuffed or ignored.”
Says administration + Trustees “will bear responsibility” for any injury that may occur in looming police action.

this is on the watch of a democratic mayor, governor, and president. And they expect to convince voters that we need to reelect them in order to stave off authoritarianism? ...How?

One of many consistencies in so many university statements the last seven months is how rarely, if ever, they seem to realise that they may have Palestinian students and faculty, let alone from Gaza.

Taking over Hamilton Hall as done in 1968, Columbia students unfurl a banner that reads 'Hind's Hall,' in reference to Hind Rajab, a six-year-old girl killed by Israeli forces.
Hundreds of students cheer as the banner is revealed, erupting into chants to 'Free Palestine.'

Just obtained video showing police remove a woman’s hijab at ASU.

Legal sources tell @ABC15 that four women had this happen. It’s another constitutional issue from this weekend's protests.

“Let them pray!”

This choked me up. Students of different faiths and backgrounds at Ohio State University form a human chain to protect Muslims who are praying while riot police prep to crack skulls for absolutely no reason.

I was sent this extraordinary letter by Henry Schwarzchild resigning from the small journal Sh'ma during the Lebanon War in 1982. It echoed the many notes I've received since 10/7 of people narrating their resignation from Jewish institutions. Felt like finding an ancestor.
