Very encouraged by Labour's plans for 'unprecedented levels of funding' in cycling and walking as outlined in this The Guardian article by @Laura_Laker who spoke to Transport Secretary Louise Haigh recently. buff.ly/4dRETtg

Well #cycling around #Dublin was an interesting 🤔 experience, taxi driver telling me bicycles aren't allowed in bus lanes... So I pointed out the bicycle symbol on the bus lane signs!

Cycle parking should never be an afterthought, it should be integral with how people interact with public transport. Translink the new station needs to encourage people to consider all alternative transport options asap Happy to engage on temporary pop up solutions

For a reality check, the 2011 Programme for Government’s key committment was to: “create the conditions to facilitate at least 36% of primary school pupils and 22% of secondary school pupils to walk or cycle to school as their main mode of transport…” by 2015.

CYCUL© But who are they accountable to? In all other places where politicians don’t live up to promises they get voted out. In NI, they get a slightly different role at the executive next time around and the cycle continues.

Well the new Northern Ireland Assembly Programme for Government makes some references to active travel and sustainable travel but is otherwise quiet on wheeling and walking as modes of transport needing investment here, so lots for us to push on Sustrans in Northern Ireland Cycling UK Northern Ireland 😕👇

Here’s the £2.6M “active travel” (AT) project on Clooney Rd. • It doesnt pass any schools, shops, or houses. • It won’t increase walking or cycling in the area. • It won’t improve DFI’s abysmal record on AT. • It only helps improve their Climate Act spending figures.

As someone who cycles to Queen's University Belfast 🎓 most days and sometimes drives, this baffles me. Most students should be making choices that do not require the expense of a car. If you drive, don't assume you get to leave your car at the front door. There are car parks.

CYCUL© My heart bleeds for the poor, entitled students. Why are there so many driving to uni and expecting parking to be provided for them? I never had a car when I was at uni - it was buses and walking everywhere.

This #motornormativity is the problem, if more chose #activetravel we wouldn't need to turn our streets into car parks and clog up our roads with traffic, more parking is not the answer... Belfast university students missing lectures with lack of parking bbc.com/news/articles/…
