Petri's take on exploration in fantasy RPGs (and specifically D&D) reflects well on how culturally ingrained that imagery can be. The Frontier Myth, and by extension, the "Exploration of Lost Continent" stories are very specific themes that are not pan-cultural.

I've tried a few VTTs for D&D 5e, and Fantasy Grounds is my favorite. It has a lot of powerful tools for automating combat and making DMing easier, and I've even used it a few times when running games in person.
