I love stumbling upon a holy well when I’m out walking. This charming creature is St John’s well just outside Spott village in East Lothian. Precious little about it on Canmore but I’m itching to get in and have a proper look at the stonework.

Today is the feast of St Guthlac of Crowland, one of my favourite saints. Here's the abbey where for many centuries his shrine stood and his memory was venerated — it's now the site of Crowland's parish church and still very much the heart of this extraordinary place.

My first piece for Noema Magazine is something I've wanted to write for a long time. It explores why flying home in four hours after a months-long walk was so profoundly dislocating, and how I understand it now in the light of pilgrimage. noemamag.com/traveling-at-t…

Today is the feast day of St Guthlac who died 1,310 years ago.
Here he is being tormented by devils at his hermitage in Crowland.
We didn't encounter any mischievous imps during our excavations at the site, but there was plenty of exciting archaeology! 👇
