Beyond the enthusiasm with #platforms #ecosystems as superior organizing model, what are they really superior for as inter-organizational structures & why? What new issues & market failures do they bring along? We explain w/ Michael G Jacobides Prof Annabelle Gawer in new article 🧵

We argue that multi sided platforms and ecosystems are distinct forms of inter-organizational structures for coordinating and organizing economic activity which address distinct types of externalities problems 2/n

E.g. while multi sided transaction platforms coordinate actors who want to transact internalizing consumption externalities (hence twosided “markets”), ecosystems emerge to coordinate actors collaborating to create joint value, internalizing cooperation externalities problems 3/n

In contexts of systemic innovation, where both cooperation and consumption externalities are critical for the innovation to become valuable, platforms and ecosystems tend to be used in combination (eg. AppStore + iOS based developers ecosystems) 4/n

However, as per any inter-organizational structures, these structures face important governance trade offs and lead also to their own endogenous #ecosystem #failures 5/n

Eg. Some of these failures manifest in collectives’ type of problems, others in abuse of “architectural control” power, others in “perverse incentives”… regulators should thus look at the ecosystem level as unit of analysis to detect these problems and correct them 6/n
