I think about, write, say and manage stuff @451research. I guess I have to say that any of the nonsense this account posts reflects only my own thoughts.

The Collaborative Work Management (CWM) software category has a second wind following five years of dominance from a leading pack. Seeing plenty of new startups, new philosophies, and new interest from larger players. #collaboration #projectmanagement #entsw #FutureOfWork

Some Collaborative Work Management (CWM) vendors have lacked confidence in targeting the #PMO and more trad #projectmanagement but it’s sinking in that PMOs aren’t going anywhere and need help. Do or don’t but continued flip flopping could cost them dearly going forward.

The end of the first (20yr long) era of #SaaS and the start of the second era is often how we explain the growing move away from niche best of breed to more unified platform solutions. Many vendors are hesitating with one foot in and one out. That’s the worst of all options.

It’s funny how memories work. Was talking to a client and he mentioned, of all things, kippers. Sent me right back to one of my happiest childhood memories of being on holiday in a B&B in some westerly Scottish island eating two massive kippers for breakfast. #funkippertime

The majority of #tech vendors I speak with regardless of category tell me they want to be a #singlesourceoftruth. That tells you how immature #SaaS is despite 20yrs of rapid innovation.

Reasons I may quit being an analyst: The industry can’t find a way to move beyond talking about “no code.” Post-pandemic I’m compelled to travel to Vegas for conferences again. I hear “we are a single source of truth” for the thousandth time. #analystlife #Ihavealimit

Remember talking to someone in Microsoft who proudly said they had two UX people FT on Planner unaware - it seemed - that there were giant teams in the pure play project, planning and work mgt markets innovating like crazy. The complacency was off the charts.

Product management software - emergent but difficult to see how that’s not deserving of its own category. Doubtful the Work Management crew is going to co-opt that.

Entering the weekend in a mild state of IPA-induced inebriation after a week of solid conversations with the smart folk in the tech industry. #satisfying

The business software battleground is largely defined by almost every vendor saying they are a “system of record” when almost none of them are in any valuable sense. The successful will do the best sense-making around why they are different.

“Chris, do you want to go to a conference in Vegas for three days, possibly mask up for those three days.” That would be a no.

“Can I use [business app] for [personal life use case]” isn’t as much of a flex as the app vendor thinks it is. The person might as well have said “this tool is super generic and I’m not sure what to use it for.” It’s time for the land/expand SaaSers to set their sights higher

A four day weekend has me raring to go tomorrow - first off - profiling an interesting product mgt sw vendor, then a value stream mgt sw vendor, then some team level theme planning.

Early morning bike ride and coffee pit stop priming the nervous system for a day of briefings with tech vendors and writing up profiles of the interesting ones.
