Sharing some of my favorite music podcasts, including TAK Ensemble Sound Opinions No Dogs In Space and burning ambulance dot substack dot com - listen authentically and adventurously!
Stereolab - Mars Audiac Quintet (Elektra, 1994) Just an all-time groovy slab of juicy goodness, with hypnotic beats, rich keyboards, and TUNES. A dose of pure pleasure then as now. #5albums90s1
Grant Lee Buffalo - Mighty Joe Moon (Slash/Reprise, 1994) Filled with immense power, indelible melodies, and a connection to Americana that runs as deep as a mineshaft. Phillips and Paul Kimble made a great team. #5albums90s1
Morrissey - Vauxhall And I (1994, Sire) At this late date, I hear a couple of standout songs with good lyrics, fine singing, and a nice overall folk-rock vibe. But the idea that this is anywhere near his best work no longer holds water. #5albums90s1
The Breeders - Last Splash (4AD, 1993) Still sounds as surprising and fun as it did all those years ago. Def more here than Cannonball, too. At least as essential as any of the Pixies best work! #5albums90s1
Less than one week to Koniwa...what other glories lie within its 12 tracks?? @kuumaproject #electronicmusic kuuma.bandcamp.com/album/koniwa
Today's A Song For Friday comes via an unexpected - and impressive - new release from Shehzaad Jiwani's art-rock project, Golden Drag. Get involved:

Lainie Fefferman - Here I Am (New Focus Recordings, 2024) Deeply involving song cycle based on the Torah - seeing it as survival guide, source of mystery, and teller of gripping tales. Theatrical, edgy, lush - a unique experience beautifully played by TRANSIT New Music & guest vocalists.
Metallica - S/T (Elektra, 1991) A necessary reset after they disappeared up their own bungholes on AJFA (not to mention the terrible production), with great *emotionally* driven songs and a monstrously massive sound. Undying masterpiece. #5albums90s1
A tasty slab of cosmic country funk from Jeffrey Silverstein - dig into 'Gassed Up' today, get hungry for the Roseway EP on June 14th from Arrowhawk Records! youtu.be/JQUDZiVWVTw?si… via YouTube
Leonard Cohen - The Future (Columbia, 1992) Filled with endlessly quotable lines, magisterial arrangements, unexpected covers, and that burnished sepulcher of a voice, this continues to astonish. Cohen’s Time Out Of Mind. #5albums90s1
Another sublime selection of layered vocals and acoustic guitars from Anastasia Coope! Listen Sorghum now and keep counting down to Darning Woman, out May 31 on JAGJAGUWAR. youtu.be/odXndoWJq0k?si… via YouTube
Massive Attack - Blue Lines (Virgin, 1991) Never get tired of this collection of immaculate grooves and bespoke vocalists. To be honest, its toughest competition in this race might be from other MA albums released in the 90s! #5albums90s1
Finally caught up with Ethan Coen’s Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind, which leaves Prime Video in 8 days - and it is a must-watch! Not so much a documentary as a chance to put your face up against the blast furnace that he was. #rockandroll amazon.com/Jerry-Lee-Lewi…
OK, so we are ON for #5albums90s1 - my usual 'about 25%' selection is featured here: open.spotify.com/playlist/3Klsm…
