Early research found pandemic-era emergency licensed teachers were more diverse & just as effective as regular teachers, but a new WP by Ben Backes, James Cowan, Dan Goldhaber, & Roddy Theobald finds later cohorts appear less effective than initial ones. Read here: bit.ly/3JCmDa6

🚨New paper in The JHR on the political economy of teacher strikes!

Matthew A. Kraft & I find that teacher strikes publicly signal the need for change in education. Strikes cause big increases in education ads in campaigns & in school spending.

Thanks to Jill Barshay for writing about our work on special education teacher bonuses in Hawai`i. This fact is correct (see left figure), but focusing on the causal estimates on the right, the policy did reduce special education vacancies RELATIVE TO general education vacancies.

I am so excited to see that SREE has introduced a new section devoted to special ed, chaired by Jason Chow. It's an excellent opportunity to put special ed researchers in conversation with methodologists, policy researchers, and folks from other fields. See you there!
