On this day in 1974, Soviet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov defected to Canada and requested political asylum. His escape was aided by Toronto ballet critic John Fraser who distracted the KGB officer assigned to follow Baryshnikov. He briefly toured with the National Ballet of Canada.
