In the wilds of Manitoba at Pine Springs bison ranges. I was keen to see Prairie Bison up close but wasn’t expecting to get this close. They’re inquisitive but harmless - as long as you’re sensible. That’s the male growling by the way, not me.

The American #Bison reintroduction work being implemented by Tom Olson and family in Canada is truly remarkable. Generally under-appreciated though by Canadians - apart from the First Nations people who recognise the massive importance of restoring this keystone species.

American Bison - constantly on the move, engineering the environment. Fascinating animals. The Fescue grasslands they restore as they remove some of the trees, actually lock-up more carbon due to huge deep root systems, than the forests which burn via lightning every few decades.

It's time! It's time to #floodthestreets. It's time to #floodthestreets with your rage, your anger, and your disappointment. It's time to take control. Join me, March for Clean Water, Sat 26th of October 2024, Parliament Square London. Turn your outrage into action.

Just had an amazing few days in the company of the remarkable and inspirational Tom Olson, who is restoring wild American Bison to ranchlands in Canada. Bison are vitally important ecosystem engineers. Here’s a brief video clip from 8 years ago. images.app.goo.gl/NWqqQ499ztyiYZ…

Images of Tom Olsen’s #Waterton Ranch where the prairie meets the Rockies. Land being currently rested after a blitz of #Bison pulse grazing which led to remarkable recovery of the fescue and wildflower grasslands which had historically been degraded by intensive cattle grazing

Very pleased to hear that Tim Birch has joined the Board of Trustees Tir Natur a charity focusing on #rewilding in #Wales. Tim was hugely helpful and supportive to Rewilding Britain some years ago as we developed the #WildPeak project with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust tirnatur.cymru/meet-the-team?…

Ospreys nest on this ganglidubriwotsitthingummy on the banks of the Bow River in Calgary city centre every year. All we need in the UK is a few ganglidubriwotsitthingummies - oh and some decent urban river water quality - and we could have this too.

If you’re ever in #Vancouver check out Stanley Park. A wonderful mix of formal gardens and natural habitats including beaver lake, Pacific rainforest, beaches and rocky shores. Within walking distance of the city.

As rewilding continues to gather momentum it is critically important that we ramp up the scale of key initiatives, because size really does matter when it comes to moving up the rewilding spectrum. Here’s an absolute belter of a job aiming to do just that. rewildingbritain.org.uk/about-us/who-w…

Fantastic to see thousands of Pink #Salmon running up streams in and around Ketchikan in #Alaska. Interesting to hear that fish farming has been banned in Alaska since 1990 to protect wild fish populations. Something we may need to get our heads around in due course in the UK.

Another day, another Alaskan salmon spawning experience. This time it’s stunningly colourful Sockeye Salmon in small streams at the Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau. Great to see them thriving in a landscape where beavers have created extra spawning streams and access to more ponds

September is here and as MPs prepare to return to Parliament once again, now is a crucial time to get nature recovery firmly back on their agenda. (1/3)

This now ragged t-shirt started its life with me somewhere in the Western Australian outback on an amazing 10 day INTECOL field trip after a conference in Perth 28 yrs ago. I can’t consign it to the bin somewhere off the coast of Alaska without a long service acknowledgement.

This is very disappointing and, at the end of the day, it's a false economy... ...because nature friendly farming boosts the economy, reduces flood risk, supports food production, and is good for the nation's health theguardian.com/environment/ar…

Just had a great wildlife-watching fix near Sitka, Alaska - young Coastal Brown Bear fishing for Chum Salmon, several Humpback Whales including one breaching (rarely done round here), Steller's Sea Lions, Sea Otters and Bald Eagles galore. A fantastic intact ecosystem.
