As I mentioned on a chat group, this reasoning was behind the failure of the Doha Round of WTO trade reform. When poor countries pushed for fairer access to markets in rich countries they were blocked. They were getting too competitive.

My review of Andrew Sillen's story of a man enslaved at sea during the American Civil War is out. A rollicking naval yarn and critique of apologist versions of the story and of the Civil War. It also shows the global dimensions of this domestic conflict. epubs.ac.za/index.php/newa…

My report on migration governance reform in East Africa is now out! There is a lot that the rest of Africa can learn from the EAC experience, though even they still have a way to go. nsi.org.za/publications/o…

Our migration report, focusing on the East African Community is now out. Authored by Alan Hirsch, the report finds that while the EAC has made significant progress, there’s still more to be done and valuable lessons for the rest of Africa to consider bit.ly/3IJ8Elq

Curious that the US chose Eswatini as its new destination for deported migrants. Perhaps the POTUS admires the country's absolute monarchy? nytimes.com/2025/07/15/us/…

I learned a lot from the East African experience of opening up borders in their regional community. Mostly positive lessons plus a to-do list. theconversation.com/east-african-c…
