Wyndham Lewis' study shows his wife Froanna. In the 1930s, his eyesight was declining as a result of an undiagnosed tumour pressing on his optic nerve, which might account for the prominence of red in his later work.

I set out to find bright carpets of bluebells and came upon only small, scattered clusters. But these jewels of blue amid the green, with supporting stitchwort, like tiny cheerleaders, can never be a source of disappointment. Sometimes a whisper is more powerful than a shout.

TaversΓΆe Tuick on Orkney’s Rousay is a pretty cool Neolithic chambered cairn, with two storeys (very rare!) and a ladder to climb between them. Plus some very luminous moss. β€˜I quite like this one’ said my teenage son, which from him is high praise indeed.

On May Eve, Household's in Shrewsbury and Edgmond decorated their door frames with flowers, particularly marsh marigolds, as well as birch wood and mountain ash. This was believed to ward off witches and prevent evil spirits from entering the home.

Ten years ago I was in reception at the Holiday Inn Salford quays, and the man ahead of me in the queue said loudly and laughingly 'Why would i want a chicken?' And the receptionist said ' check In'. I often think about it.
