Today I saw a Carabus goryi, a carnivorous beetle that eats snails as well as earthworms and caterpillars. What a beautiful beetle! Fast too.

Happy World #WetlandsDay! This is a cypress and water tupelo #swamp in Hale County, where #Riverkeeper Nelson Brooke helped scientists discover a new #species: the Twisted Dwarf Crayfish. #Alabama leads the nation in #crayfish diversity, and #wetlands are vital #habitat for them.

Is there a Mastod0n instance that is popular with the naturalist and nature art community? Not sure how much more of El0n idiocy I can take, and I've already moved my main account to Mastod0n.

This microsnail could use a dentist. I suspect that whoever gave it the common name armed snaggletooth would agree with me. Gastrocopta armifera, collected on Big Ridge in DeKalb County, AL. #MolluskMonday #MolluscMonday

Question for anyone with knowledge about caddisflies. Does the presence of caddisfly cocoons indicate that a streamlet rarely dries up completely?

Today is National Endangered Species Day! We're proud to play a part in the protection of Alabama's endangered species, like our beautiful finned friends found here in Jefferson County: the rush, watercress, and vermilion darters.

1/2: Hot off the presses from The University of Alabama Print Shop! New poster highlighting Alabama Mussels! Could not fit all ~185 species! Had a blast making this with Stuart McGregor, Kendra Abbott, Nate Sturm (map!), & Gary Hastert (map!). Richard Bryant provided the beautiful photos.
