Western Canada Airways was founded by James Armstrong Richardson Sr. in 1927, with the goal of using aviation to open up the mineral mining opportunities in the Canadian North. These bush pilots helped change the history of Northern Canada. 🧵 2/6

By the late-1920s, plans to build the railroad and port were moving forward but supplies had to get to Churchill. Western Canada Airways was hired for the task, which was assigned to Rod Ross, Bernt Balchen, ‘Al’ Cheesman and F.J. Stevenson. 🧵 3/6

From March to April 1927, the two pilots made 27 round trips, covering 9,806 kilometres from Cache Lake, Manitoba to Churchill. The flights were made in an open cockpit Fokker aircraft through severe weather. Mechanical breakdowns were common. 🧵 4/6

They also transported 14 men and 8,116 kilograms of supplies to Churchill so work could begin on the projects. This was the first large airlift operation in Canadian history and within two years, Churchill's ocean port was officially opened. 🧵 5/6
