Here's how a US-sanctioned Cambodian tycoon with human trafficking ties attempts (poorly) to hide his connection to a $1.5 billion port under construction by a Chinese state-owned firm along Cambodia's coast...🧵

☑️ First assignment for Bloomberg

For two years, I've covered 's growing role in the murky global primate trade. Thrilled to contribute visuals to Businessweek's latest deep dive into the issue.

.United Nations managers are trying to discredit me personally to brush aside the issues raised in my The Guardian report, multiple sources told me.

That is ironic. In March UNDP Iraq invited me to a workshop to train others on how to investigate corruption. My credentials were good then.

With deep regret we announce the termination of diplomatic relations with Nauru. This timing is not only China’s retaliation against our democratic elections but also a direct challenge to the international order. Taiwan stands unbowed & will continue as a force for good.

Massive coincidence that Daily Mail Online interviewed EXACTLY the same Taiwanese voter I did, in exactly the same place, and she gave exactly the same quotes 🤔If you rip off on-the-ground reporting, at least attribute..

Just another day in central Sihanoukville, Cambodia's capital of Chinese-led organised crime groups, human trafficking and cyber slavery. The man is screaming 'help me' in English while three guys beat and taser him over and over. Police, as usual, nowhere to be seen.

Jokowi's ascension in 2014 sparked hope for Indonesia's democracy. But now, he's leaving behind a more controversial legacy. My latest piece explores how Nusantara, the new capital, embodies the democratic decline under Jokowi:

In recent months, the Southern Cardamom REDD+ project in Cambodia has garnered controversy as a kind of negative poster-child for the global carbon credit market. With support from Earth Journalism Network, we spent nearly a week total with local communities. Here's what we found. 🧵

Great reporting here from Alastair McCready on the role of SEZs like Boten and the Golden Triangle on organised crime activity in Laos.

Boten and the GTSEZ are two of the darkest places I have reported from and this piece does a great job diving into them

Important investigation from Frontier. Western companies are exploiting legal loopholes as they continue to export their trash and use this part of the world as their dumping ground.
