Scott Hechinger And tow lots tend to be in poor areas... And tow companies get $x per car... And poor people often have no off street parking... Spend a day at the impound lot day after a tow event, see the desperation of the people, for many $400 is an entire week of pay. Eat or car? Terrible.

I remember arguing with a cop at a recent closure in East Oakland about trying to find a way to avoid towing a homeless woman's vehicle because of the morass of bureaucratic and financial suffering it creates. His response was that would never happen to a responsible person

BREAKING: Another person incarcerated on Rikers Island died this morning. They are the second person to die this week and the 12th person to die this year.

Shameful. Securus (owner of JPay) profits off of incarceration. Charges a fortune for families to stay in touch. Made $770 million while families struggled. 1 in 3 go into debt. Phone calls are still almost a dollar a minute. They're peddling a Hip Hop contest to seem "cool."

Just as our system should not require people to buy their freedom back from the government in the form of bail, we must roust out ways in which our bureaucracies and laws cause massive harm to people because of their means. From our Advocate Addie Gilson partnersforjustice.org/blog-stories/t…

The bitter irony of this story coming out the same day a Supreme Court justice suggested women should just have the babies they don’t want and give them up for adoption.

Re all takes on why police need to be everywhere (including schools) in case of a bad guy: You know who is fearless in throwing their body in front of danger? Fucking rodeo clowns. You know who didn't create a school-to-prison pipeline? Also rodeo clowns. #FundRodeoClowns

Want to get mad on a Friday night? Join me for a quick tour of how CA cops are exploiting the most vulnerable people, stealing people's cars, and helping tow yards make insane profits. Receipts below. Let's dive in. 1/13

“ The fluidity with which rights can be bequeathed and taken away, in fact, reduces rights to privileges. In a truly democratic society, civil rights should not be contingent on a fortuitous combination of Supreme Court Justices.” newyorker.com/news/our-colum…

Anyone who truly cares about the safety of other humans and of our communities and of all the animals and plants should be more focused on the crimes of the powerful that police don’t record, and on myriad threats to safety that elites don't call "crimes." currentaffairs.org/2020/08/why-cr…

Preventable air pollution kills 5 times as many people in the US as homicide. Wage theft dwarfs all police-reported property crime combined. Tax evasion costs 100 times cop-recorded property crime. Cops themselves steal more $$$ from people than all burglary combined. And so on.
