Any time I consider branching out, discussing different areas or time periods. I just come crawling back to home... northern English archaeology needs love! 🦴🦴🦴 The Lake District is an archaeological EDEN everyone should enjoy! #archaeology #LakeDistrict #SaveWindermere

I'm turning into an archaelogical Rain Man these days. Instantly knew exactly where these were... There's a henge in the next field too!

Sad UPDATE! ‼️⁉️‼️ This image - the only known image of Shap Avenue - once the largest megalithic monument in Britain, is currently MISSING. All we have is a single extremely grainy photograph from the 1990s. It likely belongs to the Lowther Family - and I NEED their contacts!

A remarkable Pictish ring has been discovered at Moray fort after more than 1000 years in the ground by a University dig volunteer who thought he only had a knack for finding 'shiny pebbles' abdn.io/U1

Without wanting to sound like a broken record this month - if you study Avebury, but don’t look at Shap Avenue (an extremely similar monument that survived until the 1840s), you’re doing it wrong 😑 I will keep banging this drum until it’s mainstream #archaeology

Whacky conspiracy theories aside, are there any good sources that specifically explore the position of Gobekli Tepe on a mega limestone pavement? 🤔 It seems like a pretty big part of the story how it's plonked right in the middle of that alient landscape... Jens Notroff Lee Clare

I found a few new pieces of the lost Shap Avenue painting! It had a rainbow! And another engraving, showing how its southern end once appeared... 🤔 🌈 "tradition states it once extended ... a distance of seven miles from Shap!" - J.B. Deane, 1833 #archaeology #art

The fact so many assumed the stone came from Orkney (when it was the most unlikely option) reinforces how dominant Orkney-Wessex axis still is within British Neolithic studies. Stonehenge tale gets ‘weirder’ as Orkney is ruled out as altar stone origin theguardian.com/uk-news/articl…

Brilliantly put by Brophy. Pop-archaeology (specifically) has LONG suffered from an Orkney / Stonehenge bias, often ignoring hundreds of important sites in-between! 🤨 It turns out, when you investigate links, you find them (e.g., pottery / bones). But you have to look first...

In the new edition of my book, I include a photo of 'Maiden Castle' on Burnmoor. But you'll be missing the raw unedited version. The version with me, shirtless, straddling the cairn, drone remote in hand 🥵 (I mean, literally 🥵, as it was HOT) #archaeology #history #prehistory

This year we lost a great archaeological theorists in Chris Tilley. To think about the relevance of his work today Rachel Crellin, Julian Thomas & I are putting a session on TAG45 @ Bournemouth. If you’re interested in giving a paper we’d love to hear from you! tag2024.wordpress.com/2024/09/05/s1-…
