In California, if someone is on your property and won't leave after you ask them, you can use reasonable force to eject them.

Remaining on the property after being asked to leave is trespassing.

If a professor invites you to dinner at his home, that does not convert his home into the public square. It is not an irrevocable invitation to remain indefinitely.
