Capitalize "dean" when used as a formal title before a name: Dean John Jones, Deans John Jones and Susan Smith. Lowercase in other uses: John Jones, dean of the college; the dean. Lowercase "dean's list" in all uses: He is on the dean's list. She is a dean's list student.

Some commonly used tennis terms: double-fault, double-faulted. Love, 15, 30, 40, deuce, advantage, tiebreaker. Report set scores: Serena Williams defeated Madison Keys 7-6 (5), 6-2. Show tiebreakers in parentheses after the set score, using the loser's points in the tiebreaker.

For transportation vehicles, it's bus or buses. The verb forms: bus, bused, busing. In a restaurant, to clear dishes from a table: The busser buses tables. If you add an S for buss or busses, that means kisses. The verb forms: buss, bussed, bussing.

We do not use a hyphen in dual heritage terms such as African American, Asian American or Filipino American. The terms are less common for non-Americans, but may be used when relevant: Turkish German for a German of Turkish descent.

When possible, avoid the terms special needs and special education. While they remain in wide use in education and law, many view them as euphemistic and offensive. Instead, aim to be specific about the needs or services in question.

The AP Stylebook defines infrastructure as an economy's capital in the form of roads, railways, water supplies, educational facilities, health services, etc., without which investment in factories can't be fully productive.

A service animal, assistance animal or guide dog aids a person with a disability. Examples include guiding a person who is blind, alerting a deaf person to the presence of another person, retrieving dropped items, pulling a wheelchair, providing help with balance. Seeing Eye dog

Capitalize proper noun elements in course names or numbered courses: American history, English, Algebra 1, History 6, Philosophy 209. Otherwise, lowercase: calculus, world history.

Advanced Placement courses and exams are college-level high school courses and exams. AP classes and AP exams are acceptable terms on second reference. Not to be confused with the AP Stylebook Workshop On Demand or the AP Writing Workshop offered by The Associated Press.

AP style uses both Sept. 11 and 9/11 for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, in the United States. Sept. 11 memorial is acceptable in all references to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at ground zero. Add location for other memorials with similar names.

School day and school year are both two words for any day or year that school is in session, either virtually or in person. Schoolwork and schoolteacher are each one word, no hyphen. However, terms such as grade school teacher or high school teacher are styled as separate words.

Trying to decide whether to capitalize that department or committee? Is the name made up of widely used generic terms? The Stylebook's organizations and institutions entry says to lowercase it.

Headlines have their own style rules because of the limited space available. For example, US, UK, UN and EU (no periods) are acceptable. Use single quote marks, never double quote marks. Millions and billions can be abbreviated, such as $45M or $5B.
