1865 'Aurora Borealis' oil on canvas by Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900). Based on sketches from Isaac Israel Hayes' 1860-61 polar expedition. Hayes left in June 1860 & was very surprised by the outbreak of Civil War when he returned. Via Smithsonian American Art Museum.
