Dr. Marcus Wheatland was born in Barbados in 1868 & earned his M.D. from Howard University in 1895. He established his medical practice in Newport, RI, where he introduced the 1st X-ray machine, a new device of which he was a renowned expert.

Dr. Mary Fitzbutler (b. 1869) was the daughter of Dr. Henry Firtzbutler, a man who’d fled enslavement in Virginia before earning his MD from the University of Michigan. Mary’s mother, Sarah, was the first Black woman to obtain a medical degree in Kentucky.
