Our labs have to continue to work under the CLIA regulatory framework, and verification of commercial assays doesn't happen overnight. We may not be able to scale up molecular tests (the current reference standard) in time. However, we do have options. bit.ly/2yqzf2R

ASCP A2: As I recall Dr. Thiel consumables played a huge role in contributing. Could you discuss some models you proposed to reduce emissions associated with these? #ASCP2021

Cassandra L. Thiel, PhD (@cassandralthiel) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Chris Tormey AJCP Editor ASCP A2: commuting isn't often included in LCAs, but with healthcare it's often found to be a significant portion of emissions. I believe there was a UK-based study that found healthcare commuting was a substantial portion of all car trips! #Telemedicine makes this interesting too!

AJCP Editor Chris Tormey ASCP A2: Safety is often brought up as a concern - and it's definitely a serious one. There's no point in delivering bad healthcare - that is EXTREMELY wasteful from an environmental perspective (not to mention unethical). Single use isn't the only solution to risk and safety though.

AJCP Editor ASCP A3: great question. I was intrigued by one of the references in the current paper that looked at some heme/coag and Chem testing. Seemed phleb + processing were highest emissions for labs but not sure they looked at over use! #ASCP2021

AJCP Editor ASCP Great question - this would help us determine the potential impact of reducing unnecessary testing. (Something @GreeningDoc, myself and others have started working on in other disciplines! sciencedirect.com/science/articl…)

ASCP A4: Bigger impact to #carbonemissions come from raising awareness - getting your institution to commit to decarbonization in their energy systems and in their procurement practices.
