Always an attraction at the #IUGG2023 GFZ booth – even for tiny little visitors who flew by: "The Potsdam Potato" – the Geoid representing the Earth’s #gravity field. But how is it measured?

What an inspiring talk about Geodesy and its impact on geosciences and the society! Geoffrey Blewitt held a Union Lecture at IUGG General Assembly with the title Geodesy: It's about time.

In southeastern Alaska, GPS stations record rapid uplift as a result of post-glacial rebound following the Little Ice Age ~250 years ago. When the weight of glacial ice is removed, the land surface rebounds and moves up, as recorded in the increase in height on the GPS plot.

A frank but very transparent discussion of the difficult choices being made. Also see this older post for transparency on overall registration fees: aas.org/posts/news/202… Would love to see AGU (American Geophysical Union) do something similar.
