Booker T. Washington was born #OnThisDay in 1856 in Franklin County, Virginia. Washington completed his studies and worked at Hampton Institute until May 1881, when he was asked to lead the newly formed Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

Shirletta J. Kinchen has written a stellar treatment of Black youth in Memphis during the turbulent late sixties and beyond. Her book 'Black Power in the Bluff City' is deeply researched, compelling, and innovative. It's one of the game changers when it comes to the movement in Memphis.
