The person who coined the phrase was Tede Matthews, an anti-imperialist, socialist feminist drag queen in San Francisco. It was said in the 1977 documentary Word is Out and was a critique of capitalism’s gender socialization and consumerism. Which RuPaul subsequently commodified.
