With all of this in mind, please look at this KPI report from the Oregon Department of Education. It's time to start asking questions about what a new version of accountability can look like for our state and, most importantly, for our children.

... special interest groups have built impossibly high barriers to statewide initiatives that *** we know work*** in the name of local control. But, that's an excuse.

Standardizing expectations does not preclude schools from making adaptations for their community.

Since 2019, chronic absenteeism has more than doubled for almost all student groups in OR. Other states have made concerted efforts and celebrated measurable gains through widescale home visiting programs. Why aren't we following their lead? The reason ...

Third, we need to govern better in our fiscally challenging era ahead. We cannot allow nearly 200 districts to create 200 solutions to the same damn problem.

So, why have only 6% ... have we enacted clear, concise expectations on instructional quality, fidelity to interventions, and support for out-of-school factors? I will say it ... more $ in that school will not improve absenteeism or outcomes.

An example in Portland: There is a school where we consistently spend more $ (21k per stu) and get low proficiency rates (6% proficient in reading). This is not because only 6% of students can read there.

I want to be clear: Every 👏🏼 single 👏🏼 child 👏🏼 in that school can read.

Second, we must deep dive into what is happening in our classrooms.

Teachers and instruction are critical to making dynamic, transformative, systemic change. Also, teaching is magical. Learning is magical. It should be treated with this kind of majesty.

Your child gets only one 1st grade to learn foundational reading skills. Your child gets only one 6th grade to kick off their complex math trajectory.

Accountability is more than a series of statewide metrics. It's also ownership. Where someone answers for the outcomes.

We desperately need accountability. And not the Oregon version, where we talk about spending money on the things we intend to spend money on.

That's accounting, not accountability. I know the department is working on this. That's good. And ...

More than 90% of families believe their children are on grade level, but only 40% of OR 3rd graders read proficiently.

That number drops to 30% for BIPOC students and less than 20% for students receiving special education services.

This math isn't math-ing in Oregon.

The reality is 'there's no such thing as other people's children.' But it's crickets here:

No rallying cry that Oregon children are being left behind.
No coalition of businesses pressuring our system.
No philanthropic push to set the bar higher.

[A Saturday🪡]

Dear Oregonians,

Our narrative about education is tired, and our outlook is mainly false. Our children are not doing OK; the answer is not more money.

On this Kentucky Derby day, here’s your reminder that Secretariat was faster than any horse you’ll see today. The year is 1973 and this is his track record run. Untouched for over 50 years. The GOAT.

Whatever the merits of the Palestine protests, they are shining a bright light on the dysfunctions of US higher education. More faculty are speaking up, parents are asking questions, reporters are commenting on curricula, and much more. This focused attention is long overdue.
