Born into wealth from the forced labor of hundreds enslaved by her family, LaGrange College grad Eliza Frances Andrews was born today 1840 and taught Wesleyan College. The author of "Botany All the Year Round", she was an advocate for both forest conservation and the KKK.


Professor Emerita at the Universitetet i Oslo, Inger Nordal’s scope of research ranges from the embryology/taxonomy of lilies to the flora of East Africa to alpine-arctic issues. A vocal critic of the overreach of evolutionary psychology and sociobiology, she was born on this day in 1944.

Born today in 1940, Passifloraceae specialist Linda Katherine Escobar collected 10k specimens and described 20 species. A grad University of New Hampshire, Purdue Science & UT Austin, she served as prof & herbarium director at the Universidad de Antioquia'ntioquia and as pres of the Asociación Colombiana de Herbarios.





Born this week in 1884, The Agnes Irwin School grad Mary Gibson Henry worked to preserve N American native plants over 200 botanical expeditions. She served as pres @AHS_gardening & research associate Academy of Natural Sciences (where her herbarium of 8000 specimens is held), and on @PHSgardening council.




Erna Gunther born today in 1896, and wrote foundational texts on the ethnobotany of the Makah and Salish peoples. She studied Samantha and Columbia University; and led the @UW_Anthropology for a quarter century. She was director WA State Museum @BurkeMuseum and chair of ANTH UA Fairbanks
