Annie Virginia Stephens Coker, B.S. 1924, LL.B. 1929, was born April 7, 1903. She was the first African-American woman to earn a law degree at @Cal and the first Black woman lawyer in California. She had a distinguished career in the Legislative Counsel's Office in Sacramento.

Happy Birthday to Jerry Brown, @Cal Class of 1961. He is the only person elected Governor of California four times (1974, 1978, 2010, 2014) & was both one of the youngest Governors (age 36) & the oldest (age 80). In between he was Mayor of Oakland & California Attorney General.

Blackwell sought a job at Cal in 1942, but was rejected due to his race. Cal finally corrected this injustice in 1955, hiring him as a full professor. He became the 1st African-American member of the National Academy of Sciences (1965). David Blackwell Hall is named in his honor.
