We're back! Woo-hoo! Kicking off our 9th year Oak Park USD custom plant science & gardening prog. This year's theme: FOOD! Where does it come from? How does it grow? How is farming/agriculture so important yet so destructive? Food footprints, waste & food insecurity. Let's learn!
Wk3 (forgot 2 post last wk) Oak Park USD 4th-5th grade. Huge plant science wk. Nitrogen fixing bacteria & the superhero legume plant family & Carbon drawdown/sequestration by plants to fight climate change. We planted Fall 'Frosty' peas & Red Clover, a Monarch fav/smart cover crop
A full circle moment! 2019 OPXC alumni Zach & Sebastian finish their college XC careers racing together, just for different colleges and with a lot more facial hair! 🤣🏃🏃♂️Oak Park USD Chapman TFXC Oak Park Athletics
Wk4 - 4th & 5th grade Oak Park USD Food waste & food insecurity. Each year, 1/3rd of the world's food is wasted (1.3bn tons), meanwhile 10% of the population (828 million) go hungry. We can all take action. Our 'Top Chef' game challenged teams to make new meals with 'leftovers!'
Wk5 Oak Park USD 4th&5th grade. Farming & Tech! Over the last century, tech has transformed farming efficiencies & yields in response to the need to feed our growing global population. We challenged students to invent some farm tech of their own & they did not disappoint! #nextgen
Final wk 4th&5th grade Oak Park USD We read, "The Good Garden: how one family went from hunger to having enough". A thought provoking, real account of living off the land in the hills of Honduras. Then, ending our program with a whacky, farm-favorite game of Welly/Boot Throwing!
Signs of Spring in our Oak Park USD school gardens. Students sprucing up the garden fences, bees pollinating, pea plants flowering in the greenhouse and 2nd & 3rd grade learning how to improve the soil naturally with Nitrogen-fixing soil superheroes, peas, beans & red clover.
Halfway into 6 wks with TK-1st grade Oak Park USD We have talked about farming & where food comes from, creatures vital to a healthy farm, why it is important to eat a rainbow of fruits & veggies, & how scientists found that bees need more than one type of flower nectar to thrive
2day TK-1st Oak Park USD How scientists found single crop farming contributes to bee decline. True story of CA almond growers & 2m bee colonies hired each yr to pollinate. How bees get sick eating only 1 kind of nectar. Promoting student diet variety & 5-a-day fruits&veggies🐝🌸🌻
Wrapped up our 9th year with Oak Park USD TK-1st grade. Food waste, caring for our soil, clean up the farm activity, water for the bee hive game, and a final story, How Does My Garden Grow? Sadly, funding cuts make a 10th year of garden program look unlikely. We will miss you.
This year’s culmination arrangements for Oak Park USD Red Oak & Brookside Elementary Schools. Congrats to all our 5th graders! We will miss you!
