Sea anemone makes the perfect hideout (and home) to clownfish in the South Pacific … This host has a unique toxin that clownfish are immune to – making it an excellent deterrent to any predators that might come their way. Here, some clownfish enjoy swimming in their home!

In honor of World Ocean Day on June 8th, we're sharing a few of our favorite MacGillivray Freeman Film documentaries about the ocean, starting with #TheLivingSea! The beloved film, narrated by Meryl Streep, remains a fan favorite as it celebrates the beauty of a healthy ocean.

There’s nothing like an underwater ocean adventure 🪸 In our 2003 IMAX film #CoralReefAdventure, we went to the South Pacific to bring awareness to coral reef ecosystems and document reef health. Now, the need to protect our coral reefs is more important than ever.

Filming whale sharks in Raja Ampat … #JourneytotheSouthPacific follows the story of a young boy from West Papua named Jawi, who took audiences on a journey through the lush islands of the South Pacific, where locals have learned the benefits of protecting the reefs.

We love the size and beauty of humpback whales 🐋 These miraculous creatures are the focus of our IMAX film #HumpbackWhales, where we closely follow the species. We're grateful they're making a comeback, from 600 whales in the 70s to a now growing population of 30,000 humpbacks.

What does it take to make an IMAX film about coral reefs? Hundreds of pounds of camera equipment. Thousands of miles traveled. Forty days at sea. And much more. But’s it all worth it to share the beauty of our ocean, like in IMAX film #GreatBarrierReef, by December Media. 🌎

Say hello to this South Pacific reef fish … This fish belongs to the batfish species and can be found in the waters of Raja Ampat in West Papua, Indonesia. These fish are distinctive for markings such as their yellow fins, tails, and the stripe(s) located on the facial region.

Meet the beautiful Giant Manta Ray …. These creatures are recognized by their large, diamond-shaped body and fins that resemble a wingspan. Giant mantas are stunning as they coast underwater, often cruising near the ocean floor to look for food. #JourneytotheSouthPacific

It’s a school of ribbon sweetlips! Native to the South Pacific, these distinctively striped fish are known to usually be solitary, but sometimes gather in small or large groups, as seen here. 🐟

This week … we’re exploring the beautiful 1995 film #TheLivingSea … For the film, oceanographers, researchers, and filmmakers headed to the Central Pacific islands of Palau to study and highlight the incredible marine wildlife in the region. 🌊

The healthy waters of Palau makes for an amazing research experience … In #TheLivingSea, researchers looked to better understand how to protect the local marine life. From whales to jellyfish, the team’s dedication to their scientific efforts is inspiring. 🙌

In the waters of Palau … The jellyfish are stunning! 🪼 These beautiful jellies are local to the Central Pacific region in the area’s famous Jellyfish Lake. Being immersed in a sea of jellyfish (literally!) is an indescribable experience.

The majestic jellyfish of Palau … While filming #TheLivingSea, MacGillivray Freeman Films captured a shot of these miraculous creatures, with their gelatinous bodies and dangling tentacles drifting in the waters of the Central Pacific islands of Palau. #OceanLovers #Jellyfish

These wondrous creatures are known as Blue Maxima Clams – and, yes, their coloring really is this vibrant! According to researchers, these clams contain “tiny single-celled algae living inside their tissue” – which is the source of their stunning blue hues.

This week we celebrate the opening of our new release Call of the Dolphins! The film begins its global roll-out on Friday with a world premiere at New England Aquarium in Boston followed by Museum of Discovery and Science, Tennessee Aquarium 🐢, TELUS World of Science - Edmonton, and Cosmonova in Stockholm, with more to come!
