An elastomer is often an electrical insulator, called a dielectric elastomer. It deforms under voltage.

This electromechanical transduction is analyzed using the basic algorithm of thermodynamics.

Immersed in an aqueous environment, such as pure liquid water, a moist gas, and aqueous solutions, a polymer network imbibes water molecules and swells.

The swelling is analyzed using the basic algorithm of thermodynamics.

My own enthusiasm for all-you-can-eat buffet has long gone. But this New Yorker piece brought fond memories of young family and friends.

The piece, though, is about Les Grands Buffets. The French dishes sound exotic, but musical.

Zhigang Suo There is one temperature, but there are many chemical potentials.
We need a word for every chemical, which suggests we need a prefix or suffix: '-potent'/'-potency' are not currently suffices, so perhaps?
This is an ethanol-potent mixture? ...
Are there other alternatives?

Thank you Peter Warwick Morgan. I’ll mention to the class theses words and phrases associated with the chemical potential of ethanol—

Drunk
Happy
Hangover
Alcoholic
Under the weather

RePopulus🇬🇷 Humans knew how to measure temperature before humans knew what temperature is. This history of thermometers is illuminating.

The concept of chemical potential was introduced in 1878 by Gibbs.

Is chemical potential the earliest significant scientific concept made in America? Ash Jogalekar

We have multiple words to indicate that chemical potential of H2O is high—humid, wet, moist, steamy. What else do I miss?

We don’t have much of a vocabulary for the chemical potential of any other species of molecules. Not even for oxygen!

Energy transfers from a place of high temperature to a place of low temperature.

A species of molecules transfers from a place of high chemical potential to a place of low chemical potential.

The analogy plays out in this chapter.
