Let me be clear:

Under my Administration’s proposal, if Big Pharma won’t make taxpayer-funded drugs accessible to the public, we’d be prepared to use existing laws to allow competitors to make and sell these drugs for less.

I believe if taxpayers fund the development of a new medicine, they ought to be able to afford it.

That's what today's action is all about.

A victory for clinical trial transparency!
In 2021, UAEM, my students, & I FOIAed U.S. FDA's 'Pre-Notices' to sponsors who withhold trial results.
In 2021, Reshma Ramachandran, Joseph Ross & I urged U.S. FDA share Pre-Notices proactively.
In Feb 2023, UAEM petitioned.
Yesterday, FDA agreed.

I've been working to get the federal government to use march in rights to address unreasonable pricing of federal funded biomedical inventions since 2004 ritonavir and latanoprost cases, followed most recently by the Xtandi case. Not actually there yet, but getting closer.

The U.S. pays, by far, the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. Today, I and a majority of HELP Committee senators invited the CEOs of some of the largest pharmaceutical companies in America to testify about why that is the case. We look forward to their response.

People should not die because of their income or where they were born. We know what it will take to save lives. Now we must have the courage to stand up to the pharmaceutical industry. Let’s do it.

We need a NIH Director who will take on Big Pharma & work aggressively to lower drug prices.

While I believe that Dr. Bertagnolli is highly qualified to serve in this role, I'm not convinced she'll take on Big Pharma — and for that reason I will vote against her confirmation.
