New paper out with Rasmus Bruckner Nico Schuck Hauke Heekeren
We found that multivariate patterns of the dmPFC represented subjective value across effort-based and risky decision-making. These findings are consistent across two independent datasets.

New paper online in Nature Human Behaviour!

People make choices with rules, intuitions, & habits, but we also think through our options: weighing up outcomes & reflecting on our preferences. How does deliberation work? & what does it reveal about how humans make trade-offs over time?

If you are over 60 or have family or friends over 60, please urge them to self isolate as soon as possible. Show them the mortality data.

I see countless images of people partying in large groups and it will put older people at mortal risk.

Tired of reading abt covid? Just posted a new ms showing that values encoded in OFC are causal to choices. I've been thinking about this for 15 years, and we finally nailed it

This is pretty cool: Bishop's Pattern Recognition and
Machine Learning is a seminal AI book and you can now get all the code in jupyter python 3 notebooks to play around. Great resource for teaching as well!

Most cognitive tasks are absurd abstractions of reality (that brains are actually set up to deal with). Naturalistic imaging using movies can remedy this and provide new perspectives

Nice overview by Redcay & Dustin Moraczewski focussing on social interaction

New paper modelling OCD just accepted in APA Journals
Psych Review – fantastic work by 1st author Isaac Fradkin, also by Thomas
Parr, Jon Roiser 🟣, Jonathan Huppert & me. Isaac’s key idea is that many
aspects of OCD can be explained by a single computational change: <drumroll>

Tired of manually formatting and reporting results from output in manuscripts? 🥱

Try `report` 📦 to automatically produce reports of statistical models and dataframes according to the best practice guidelines (e.g., APA style)! 📃✍️💅

**Data visualisation thread**

In the past few years, quite a few papers were published arguing that the way we visualise data in social and biomedical sciences should be more transparent. Below are a couple of do’s and don’ts for a range of designs. 1/

Relapses after stopping antidepressants are very frequent, yet there is little evidence to guide the decision to stop meds. First results of our Schweizerischer Nationalfonds (SNF) AIDA study with He Wa in JAMA Psychiatry today suggest that the reward-effort trade-off may index the relapse risk.
