Because with leftists, it's not enough to use a neutral term. You must use the anti-bad-stuff term to signal your allegiance. "Folx" means you're anti-bad-stuff. "Folks" is too neutral. Also, leftists (esp larping trust fundies) disdain anything with Southern connotations.
