Kind of a big deal: GPT-4 simulates people well enough to replicate social science experiments with high accuracy Note this is done by having the AI prompted to respond to survey questions as a person given random demographic characteristics & surveying thousands of "AI people"

Does astrology work? We tested the ability of 152 astrologers to see if they could demonstrate genuine astrological skill. Here is how the study was designed and what we found (including a result that really surprised me): 🧵

Tarekegn Bululta Somalilanders Abdirashid Hashi "Ethiopia has the right to have its own port for trade"? Who gave it this "right"? What would all the other landlocked countries in Africa and other continents say? Better: establish good relations with your neighbours, refrain from imperialistic nostalgia& engage in cooperation.

A fallacy about social media is that in a marketplace of ideas, good information will win out. Aside from the other reasons this is doubtful, there is the well-established finding that bad information (even clearly false stuff) will start to seem plausible if you see it often.

Ethiopia has interfered in Somali politics since the mid-1990s, with partly disastrous effects (including fuelling a militant Islamic insurgency in the early 2000s). Ethiopian troops have committed horrible warcrimes & human rights violations in south-central Somalia 2006-2008.

It seems weird to keep seeing the opinion here that AI might just go away. Adoption rates among students and teachers in surveys are over 70%. In a survey in Denmark, over 50% of journalists and programmers were using AI for work. And people generally like AI when they use it.
