How do you solve your problems in GIS?

My idea: Start with the solution, not the tool!

Most of us think of a tool to use to solve a problem but instead, we should start with finding the solution and then decide which tool to use.

The solution-first

Every GIS user should know the different categories of geospatial software.

What do they represent? why? how?

Here they are;

1. Proprietary Software. They often require a license fee to use.

Examples:
Esri ArcGIS
Hexagon Geospatial (ERDAS IMAGINE, GeoMedia)
Trimble

Many years ago, we learnt about MapWindow and used it for a while.

A few months later, we developed a custom solution to suit our needs (our own GIS)

We later learnt about Quantum GIS (known as QGIS today). We explored it inside-out and became our go-to GIS.
