Once again, EU Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi has been spreading disinformation about #nicotine. This time he tweeted, then deleted "nicotine causes cancer". He "corrected" it to read that nicotine "contributes to the development of cancer". /1 clearingtheair.eu/en/post/exclus…

Even this second statement contradicts the Commission's own scientific advice on the subject, which clearly states that “nicotine is not considered a human carcinogen”. /2 health.ec.europa.eu/document/downl…

All this happened after a meeting with anti-nicotine NGOs. We've got questions for the Commissioner: 1. Did he write the first tweet, or was it his team? 2. Who told them to delete the first tweet and replace it with the second? /3

3. What involvement, if any, did European Cancer Organisation, European Cancer Leagues, European Society of Cardiology & SmokeFree Partnership have in determining the content of post-meeting statements, including the false claim? (for what it's worth, the post-meetup photo looks a bit like a hostage situation). /4

Lastly, does this breach the EU's code of conduct for Commissioners? "Members shall...not act or express themselves, through whatever medium, in a manner which adversely affects the public perception of their independence, their integrity or the dignity of their office".

3. 💬 Claim: Companies “know full well” they’re lying and “targeting youth.” 🤔 Fact: Proving intentional deception requires evidence — not opinion. Yes, youth vaping is a concern. But most Canadian vape businesses sell to adults trying to quit smoking.

4. 🫁 Claim: “Vaping has been shown to cause severe health harms.” ⚠️ Fact: The science says vaping is not harmless, but far less harmful than smoking. Public Health England & the Royal College of Physicians estimate ~95% less risk than cigarettes.

5. 💨 Claim: “Vaping causes respiratory illness and mental health issues.” 📉 Fact: Studies show some correlations — not proven causation. Most cases of severe lung injury (EVALI) were from illegal THC products, not nicotine vapes.

6. 📊 Claim: “Vaping leads to addiction and long-term harm, especially for youth.” ✅ Fact: Nicotine is addictive. That’s true. But vaping dramatically reduces exposure to toxic chemicals found in smoke. For adult smokers, it’s a harm-reduction tool, not a gateway.

7. 💰 Claim: This new law will help recover health-care costs. 🧾 Fact: BC’s Attorney General already admitted the money will go to general revenues, not health care. So what’s this really about — health or headlines?

8. Ms. Sharma Harm reduction isn’t about pretending vaping is perfect. It’s about recognizing that less harm is better than more harm. That’s why Health Canada, the UK, and even the FDA say vaping can help smokers quit.

9. Honest public health policy starts with evidence, not fear. Demonizing a safer alternative keeps people smoking — and that’s the real tragedy.
