My message to Jewish communities here in the UK and around the world this Passover.

Passover marks the celebration of the freedom of the Jewish people from Egypt. This year, it is difficult to celebrate any holiday while there are still hostages in Gaza. At the 🇬🇧 Embassy, we keep an empty seat for the hostages, hoping that we can celebrate their return soon.

Now, more than ever, we must work together with our partners around the world to avoid further escalation in the Middle East.

This conflict is continuing because Hamas won't take the hostage deal.

Iran’s attack on a sovereign state was dangerous and reckless.

Co-ordinated with the USA, we are sanctioning leading Iranian military figures and entities involved in the attacks against Israel and tightening the net on key actors within Iran’s drones and missile industries.

Earlier today I spoke to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - בנימין נתניהו and reiterated our support for Israel’s security following Iran’s reckless attack at the weekend.

Further significant escalation will only deepen instability in the region.

This is a moment for calm heads to prevail.

Today I formally condemned in the strongest terms Iran’s attack on Israel in a call with Iranian Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian.

I made clear that Iran must stop these reckless attacks, de-escalate and release the MSC Aries.

Iran’s attack last night was a dangerous and unnecessary escalation.

I want to pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of the Royal Air Force and our allies in protecting civilians.
