S. Trent Rosenbloom The importance of a 'correct and clear understanding' must be weighed. In some contexts, we need to eliminate as much ambiguity as possible. Legal and scientific come to mind. There is a difference between 'Let's eat grandma' and 'Let's eat, grandma'.

S. Trent Rosenbloom grammar is a construct of the man.

LOL JK

grammar is a set of generally accepted rules designed to facilitate shared understanding in communication. that said, it shouldn't be static - it can adapt; also, 'generally accepted' can include 'by [this or that] group'.

S. Trent Rosenbloom One problem I have is that this comment suggests that understanding is binary, but in my experience understanding is a spectrum. Better understanding is worthwhile within reasonable limits. If you want to help someone, help them be better understood with clearer communication.

Yesterday I saw a SM comment, 'ACAB, even the grammar police - if you understood what was written, that is what matters - grammar is a tool of white supremacy.' I can't stop thinking about this, esp. as a teacher of a graduate course on scientific communication. What say you?

It would help to understand why the default seems to be email.

Will an AI be licensed to practice medicine in the future? 🤔
