Volume Warning 🔊

“GET AWAY FROM MY BABIES 😡”

Or at least that’s our guess on what she’d say 🤷🏻‍♂️

🚨FACT FRIDAY🚨

There are lots of birds who eat fish, but not nearly as many who dive feet first, fully submerge themselves, and still fly away!

We’ve mentioned Ospreys have zygodactyl feet, but did you know they will even orient the fish forward in flight to reduce drag?

Another beautiful morning on Captiva!

These little chicks are being well fed. In fact, yesterday they had 11(!!!) feedings. They’re becoming more mobile relative to when they first hatched and they can hold their heads up better now 🥰

🚨FACT FRIDAY🚨

Osprey are quite expressive and great communicators, primarily because they have 8 unique vocalizations and 11 physical displays to express feelings and convey a message!

P.S. Jack and Edie have two chicks now, and they’re already making quiet little noises too!

It’s tiring work being a parent, and the eggs haven’t even hatched yet!

But we’re hoping for a hatch sometime this week. Tune in on Twitch or YouTube to watch with us!🤞🐣

🚨FACT FRIDAY🚨

Osprey feathers are not naturally waterproof, but they can make them highly water resistant using waxes/oils produced by the preen gland. This helps greatly given their sea-faring lifestyle!

Here you can see water beading up as opposed to soaking into feathers.

🚨FACT FRIDAY🚨

Osprey have been observed having a nearly 70% success rate on fishing attempts! Most of our followers may be familiar with the fact Osprey are excellent fishers, but may not know (until now) that the average Osprey will catch a fish once every four attempts! 🎣

Edie and Jack are still working hard to take care of their 4(!!!!!) eggs!

We’re ~ 7-10 days out from when we anticipate the first one may hatch 🐣

🚨FACT FRIDAY🚨

During nesting season, most birds will develop a “brood patch”, which is a section of no feathers or significantly fewer feathers on their underside.

This is because feathers are an effective insulator, and would inhibit the warming benefit of incubation!
