I follow many AI-related pages & people to stay up to date. In all the AI work I have seen, no matter how good it is, there has been a disturbing, uncanny point that I couldn’t fully describe until now:

All the so-called “AI art” made with AI are like people coming out of Botox.

Alan Turing must be turning in his grave. AI proponents will do anything for profit, exposure and to fuel the AI hype!

When AI was just an academic field it was actually quite cool, intellectual.
When big business came in with huge amount of money and weird incentives it turned it into a rather dumb hype shit show.
Now politics comes in, and it will turn it into a complete dumpster fire.

I follow many AI-themed accounts & pages to stay updated. Almost every day I read comments like crazy, incredible etc. for new versions of LLM & diffusion-based models on the market. Then I look at all this 'incredible work' done with them, it's all garbage or ordinary at best.

I find even smartphones too much, let alone AR glasses & bracelets.
As my life experiences increased, our dependence on technology started to seem very pathological & disturbing, whereas until my 30s I thought transhumanism was the indispensable future of humanity & our salvation

Think of Scandinavian churches or German houses with steep roofs — to prevent snow building up.

Or the crofters' cottages of Scotland with thick walls and small windows — staying warm and dry in a region that is wet and cold.

It looks charming, but this was functional design.

The thing with averages is that they tend to look very similar.

That is, if you average out many random things, the results will start to resemble.

AI art is simply averaging out human art hence it loses the diversity that makes art what it is.

The Society of Authors collected survey data from 800 of its members and found that 26% of illustrators and 36% of translators had already lost work due to generative AI. This tracks completely with anecdotal data from my own reporting.

Not good.

If a large language model (LLM) can correctly tell someone how to magically make a homemade bioweapon then either:

1 - The information is already available on the internet.

2 - The model builders scraped private information from bioweapons companies to train their model.

I am not certain that Hinton is right here, or that Tolga Bilge is.

But I am even less certain that they are wrong.

The fact is, we are arming bad actors with tools that we scarcely comprehend and do not at all control.

Geoffrey Hinton is right. So-called open sourcing of the biggest models is completely crazy.

As AI models become more capable they should become increasingly useful in bioweapons production and for use in large-scale cyber attacks that could cripple critical infrastructure.

We haven't even talked about the misuse of this technology!
