Thread: Two years ago today, 19 fourth-graders and two teachers were killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.

The children loved TikTok and baseball, Pokémon and Starbucks. The teachers died trying to save their students.

This is who they were:

In January, Texas DPS encountered several members of a militia, who were armed, and trespassing on private property, as they stood over five young migrants and questioned them.

Police didn’t charge the group for trespassing that day — but they did document it in a report. 🧵

'I can't emphasize enough, it's not about the money,' Javier Cazares said.
His daughter Jackie was killed inside her classroom nearly two years ago.
'All we can do is hope they do the right thing... it became my life's mission that day.'

KHOU 11 News Houston The Bishop 🙋‍♀️ Also not accurate for me. In Montrose, 60 of us, no power since Thursday.

Last night CenterPoint Energy told me no timeline for restoration. Told a neighbor that “restoration is on pause” for us

We’re not on map. Harold and Kipling streets, near Woodhead, Hazard, McDuffie

Centerpoint told me tonight they have *no* restoration estimate for 60 of us in Montrose.

We’re not on interactive map as power out, though @Centerpoint says aware

A neighbor said they told her up to 3 weeks. I asked about this & was told no timeline - *not* Wednesday

Especially wild bc Abbott declared a state of disaster during the summer 2020 BLM protests

Justification: 'threats and incidents of violence' at / related to protests, 'peaceful protesters should themselves be protected from harm'

My book 'They Came for the Schools' is out today.
It tries to make sense of America's school board wars by showing how & why that fight exploded in one Texas suburb.

To really understand the anti-DEI backlash, I needed to uncover a much longer history.

Here's what I found🧵
