We find that incumbent parties performed very well in statewide pandemic-era elections, in particular when states received more generous allocations of federal fiscal aid. An additional $1,000 in aid per resident predicts a 3 percentage point increase in vote share. 2/n

43 of 45 (95%) of economists recently surveyed by The University of Chicago agreed that "Imposing tariffs results in a substantial portion of the tariffs being borne by consumers of the country that enacts the tariffs, through price increases." (The only "disagree" actually said "it depends")

Some nuanced monetary policy commentary from Stan Veuger and Mikkel Davies. One insight: "When I tell you today what I will do tomorrow, tomorrow I will have based my action on what I knew yesterday, instead of actually reacting to the moment." foreignpolicy.com/2024/09/16/fed…

Here are our back-of-the-envelope estimates of which races would have gone the other way if every state had received as little federal aid as the most underrepresented state.

Harris’s combined fiscal policies could add as much as $1.5 trillion to deficits over the next 10 years. Trump's could add as much as $4 trillion to deficits over the same period, and potentially more given the uncertainty of his tariff proposals.

These figures are similar to cost-per-job estimates presented in my research with Vince Smith and Stephanie Mercier, Ph.D. #🟦. We find that a Buy American law for shipping (cargo preference) has a cost-per-job estimate of about $100,000 per mariner job-year retained. 🧵: x.com/phoxie58/statu…
