Today, we remember the 63rd anniversary of the first Freedom Ride. The Freedom Rides gained national attention and forced intervention by the federal government, which helped secure civil rights and further erode Jim Crow.

#OTD in 1961: The original 13 Freedom Riders left Washington, D.C. on two Greyhound buses.

Freedom Riders were civil rights activists who made bus trips throughout the South protesting segregated terminals by using “whites-only” restrooms and lunch counters at bus stations.

Today, I had the extraordinary honor to bestow our nation’s highest civilian honor to 19 incredible people whose relentlessness, curiosity, inventiveness, ingenuity, and hope have kept the faith in a better tomorrow.

The nineteen individuals awarded the Medal of Freedom today built teams, coalitions, movements, organizations, and businesses that shaped America for the better.
